Self care and teaching might seem as though it borderlines on impossible. When you are so busy looking after your students, your family and your home life commitments, it’s often very hard to look after yourself as well.

This is where Habit Stacking can help you to alleviate those day to day stresses and time consuming jobs that simply cannot be avoided.

What Is Habit Stacking?

Habit stacking is just creating a series of habits that perpetuate the next habit in a natural way. When you do something which is followed by the next thing and the next in an organized manner.

For example, the habits you do each day: you brush your teeth,  then wash your face, then comb your hair, and so on.  Do you see how each action moves you to the next?

If you do these things every day in the same order, this is stacking your habits one after the other.

What Are the Benefits?

One of the simplest benefits is order. Habit stacking helps you to keep things in order and so keeps you on track. It organizes your habits, if you like.

Once you have created your series of habits, the actions within the habits become more and more natural and before you know it, voilà, you are on your way to a more harmonious day.

What does that mean for you though? Some of the benefits associated with being organized are:

  • It reduces stress levels
  • Improves sleep
  • It helps reduce depression
  • It helps reduce anxiety

And of course it helps you to focus on other things.

So, how can you make habit stacking work for you? It’s easier than you might imagine.

Step One – Analyze

Analysis of your daily routine. The first thing you will want to do is have a look at what your current habit stacking is like.

What do you do right now that works well for you?  And which habits could you eliminate or change to improve your time management or your ability to perform better?

Are you doing something each day that you don’t need to do? If so, how could you improve that habit or change it completely? What do you need to put in place to ensure you succeed in making that change?

Sometimes, simply changing the order of our habits is all we need. But other times you need a little help to make the adjustments.

Step Two – Action

Don’t waste any more time. Put your plan into action and start creating your new habit stacking routine.

Don’t worry if you don’t succeed straight away. Habits take time to form and iron out and even longer sometimes to get rid of.

So, take that first step towards organizing your habits and achieve one thing at a time. Before you know it, you’ll have stacked your habits and your old stack will be a distant memory.

Step Three – Keep Going

Now that you’ve succeeded in stacking your first set of habits, have a look at other stacks you might be able to improve and do it again. Keep going.
